WANO MC participates in Symposium for Egypt’s Nuclear Programme: El Dabaa Nuclear Project, National Economy and Public AcceptanceYara
The WANO Moscow Centre (WANO MC) Deputy Director Sergey Frolov and the New Build Support Manager Dmitry Chichikin took part in the Symposium for Egypt’s Nuclear Program: El Dabaa Nuclear Project, National Economy and Public Acceptance.
The event hosted by the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) was held on 10 January 2022 within the World Exhibition Expo-2020 in Dubai (UAE) under the leadership of the NPPA Board Chairman Dr. Amged El-Wakeel. Apart from the NPPA delegation, the meeting was attended by the Arab Atomic Energy Authority Director Dr. Salem Al-Hamdy, the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) Chairman Dr. Sami Shaaban, and senior representatives of the State Corporation Rosatom.
During the meeting its speakers discussed the project development issues associated with the first Egyptian nuclear power plant, i.e. El Dabaa to accommodate 4 VVER-1200 units, and safety, environmental impacts and public acceptance in terms of the Egyptian nuclear program.
Delivering the WANO MC presentation, Sergey Frolov focused on the importance of nuclear safety as well as WANO’s efforts to support the new units, particularly in the new entrant countries and regions. Furthermore, Sergey Frolov noted that today WANO MC provides its support to 20 new units in 7 countries in the framework of individual support programs tailored to specific needs of each new operator.
At the close of the symposium all participants expressed their confidence in the successful development of the El Dabaa Nuclear Project and the reliability of the VVER-1200 reference technology used.
