KHNP participates in Egypt’s nuclear power plant project, seeking local partnership

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) will begin cooperation with local partners in Egypt to participate in the Egypt’s EL Dabba nuclear power plant project built by Russia’s JSC ASE.

KHNP CEO Chung Jae-hoon visited Petrojet’s headquarters in Cairo on March 16 and signed a cooperation agreement with Petrojet, KHNP said.
Through the agreement, KHNP, Korea Electric Power Technology, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction will cooperate with Egyptian companies based on their experience in nuclear power plant construction and business performance.

In particular, it decided to support the training of local engineers and experts in Egypt and establish long-term cooperative relationships rather than one-time ones.

In order to participate in the EL Dabba nuclear power plant project, KHNP has secured a foundation for participation in the project by promoting cooperation with Petrojet, a leading local construction company and a public company, as it has to meet the localization requirements of the Egyptian government.

Petrojet is one of the leading EPC companies in the Middle East and Africa with various plant construction EPC (design, procurement and construction) experiences and capabilities.

CEO Chung said, “We will make efforts to successfully participate in the El Dabba nuclear power plant project so that domestic nuclear power plant equipment and materials companies can enter the Egyptian business together and breathe new life into the nuclear power industry.”

Egypt’s El Dabba nuclear power plant project is a project to build four VVER-1200 units after JSC ASE, a subsidiary of Russia’s state-run nuclear power company Rosatom, won an order from the Egyptian Nuclear Power Authority (NPPA) in 2017.

ASE is expected to place an order for EPC in the secondary sector (turbine buildings, outdoor facilities, etc.) of the project, and KHNP is trying to win the order.
